A Little Bit of Folk: From Activism to Lyricism

The Folk Music Society of Huntington is pleased to partner with the Cinema Arts Centre in co-presenting “A Little Bit Of Folk: From Activism to Lyricism,” the latest installment in archivist Bill Shelley’s series of film & video clips and discussion, Rock Legends Live! This celebration of the incredible musicians and the powerful social messages that have made folk music an inspiring vehicle for change is set for Tuesday, December 29 at 7:30 p.m. at the Cinema Arts Centre (423 Park Avenue, Huntington). The nearly two-hour program will be followed by a reception in the Sky Room. Tickets are $15; $10 for Cinema Arts Centre and FMSH members (with your membership card).
Folk music has been a favorite for generations. Its artists have been promoters of world peace, civil rights, planetary concerns and humanitarian causes. This program will focus on much-loved musicians and the social causes that informed their music.
During the 1940s-1950s, Pete Seeger had a profound impact on the post-WWII generation with his activism for civil rights and social change. Among songs featured in this program will be Seeger with “What Did You Learn in School?” and others singing his classic “Where Have All the Flowers Gone” and “Turn, Turn, Turn.” Among the many other featured performing artists are Joan Baez, Tim Buckley, Leonard Cohen, Richie Havens, Melanie, Tom Paxton and Peter, Paul & Mary.
