Hard Luck Cafe & NOOM

Since the 1960s, coffeehouses have served as smaller forums to see and hear local and regional artists. The Hard Luck Café, begun in 1992, strives to do the same by presenting local, regional and up-and-coming national touring artists in an intimate atmosphere. Held on the third Wednesday of the month, from September to June, at Huntington’s Cinema Arts Centre, the Hard Luck Café usually features a split bill with two artists/groups, preceded by an open mic (for which sign-up is at 6:30 p.m.). Admission is reduced for FMSH and Cinema Arts Centre members. Tickets are available at the box office. Refreshments are available for purchase.

Location

Hard Luck Café concerts and NOOM events are held in the Sky Room at Huntington’s Cinema Arts Centre – 423 Park Avenue, Huntington, NY.

This free Sunday afternoon event extending from 1-4 p.m., affords musicians and singers of all experience levels an opportunity to play, sing and hone their performance skills in a welcoming environment.

The monthly Folk Jams are completely acoustic, unplugged events attended primarily by amateur musicians and those who love to sing, although visitors who just want to listen are also welcome. Song selections range across the broad folk milieu, but are often taken from the Rise Up Singing songbook. Huntington Folk Festival

Since 2006, the Folk Music Society of Huntington has hosted a free, day-long festival at Huntington’s Heckscher Park featuring unplugged artist showcases and song swaps during the afternoon and an evening concert with nationally touring artists on the Chapin Rainbow Stage. Co-presented with the Huntington Arts Council, the Huntington Folk Festival is part of the Annual Huntington Summer Arts Festival presented by the Town of Huntington, produced by the Huntington Arts Council, and sponsored in part by the New York State Council for the Arts and the County of Suffolk.

Attendees are advised to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets and to either enjoy a picnic supper in the park or visit one of Huntington Village’s many and varied restaurants and eateries.

Although the day-long folk festival is of more recent vintage, the Folk Music Society of Huntington had presented its own version of a mini “folk festival — a summer evening in the park — in cooperation with the Huntington Arts Council since 1969. The event featured an annual theme along with artists whose performance repertoire fit the current theme, whether it be Women in Folk Music, The Music of the “Americas”or humorous ditties, among others.
