SUMMARY:"Just Wild About Harry" -- Long Island Artists Mark Harry Chapin's 80th Birthday via Dec. 5 Livestream
DESCRIPTION:The Folk Music Society of Huntington and the organizers of the annual “Just Wild About Harry” Chapin tribute show are teaming up to honor the famed singer-songwriter\, social activist and humanitarian\, who would have turned 80 years old on December 7.  A special livestream event — comprised primarily of video clips of past performances of Harry Chapin songs by Long Island-based artists over the 18 years that the tribute to the late performer has taken place at Eisenhower Park — is set for Monday\, Dec. 5\, at 8:30 p.m. ET.  It may be viewed online via the “Just Wild About Harry” Facebook page and others. \n \nTribute show organizer Stuart Markus and long-time show mainstay Frank Walker are curating the videos. Markus\, Walker\, show performers and others connected to the Chapin family and charities will take part via Zoom — sharing comments and reflections between songs. This year also marked the 50th anniversary of the release of Harry Chapin’s first two albums and his seminal hit\,”Taxi.” \nHarry Chapin died in an auto accident on the Long Island Expressway on July 16\, 1981\, just hours before he was supposed to perform at the Lakeside Theatre in central Nassau County’s Eisenhower Park. The concert audience that night became a vigil as the news filtered through the crowd. \nSince 2005\, Markus has organized and served as emcee for an annual tribute concert on that same stage that now bears Chapin’s name. The “Just Wild About Harry” tributes feature LI-based singer-songwriters and original bands — each playing their own interpretations of Chapin’s songs. While some performers have hewed closely to the way Chapin played his songs\, others have come up with very creative arrangements\, Markus said. \nThe annual live event is presented by the Nassau County Department of Parks\, Recreation and Museums\, and is co-promoted by the Folk Music Society of Huntington – LI’s premiere nonprofit folk music organization. \nBesides next Monday’s online show\, several online and Sirius XM radio events are being organized by the Chapin family. Information on those events\, as well as the livestream of this show\, may be found at: http://www.facebook.com/groups/696743224390313. \n \nIn addition\, FMSH President Michael Kornfeld recently hosted an hour-long online conversation on how every person can make a difference\, with Chapin’s daughters\, Jaime Chapin Miller and Jen Chapin\, and several recipients of grants from the Harry Chapin Foundation. Entitled “When In Doubt\, Do Something – An Inspiring Conversation\,” the event can still be viewed on the Harry Chapin Foundation’s Facebook page (www.Facebook.com/harrychapinfoundation) or its YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/harrychapinfoundation).

SUMMARY:NorthShore Original Open Mic (NOOM) in the Sky Room at Huntington’s Cinema Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:Dates: Dec. 7\, Dec. 14\, & Dec. 28 \nThe Folk Music Society of Huntington joins with the Cinema Arts Centre in presenting the Northshore Original Open Mic (NOOM) three Wednesday nights each month. The open mic series\, held in the Cinema’s Sky Room (423 Park Avenue\, Huntington\, NY)\, is set for 7:00pm\, with open mic sign-up beginning at 6:30pm. Although it is free to attend\, donations will be sought and gratefully accepted. \nFeatured artist Jon Goldstein will play a 20-minute spotlight set\, starting at around 8:00pm. \n“It’s our pleasure to continue the ever-deepening partnership between the Cinema Arts Centre and two pillars of Long Island music scene – the Folk Music Society of Huntington and NorthShore Original Open Mic (NOOM)\,” said Dylan Skolnick\, co-director of the Cinema Arts Centre. “The Folk Music Society of Huntington’s monthly Hard Luck Café series has been a mainstay of our programming for many years\, bringing some of the country’s best folk music performers to dedicated folk fans here in Huntington. With the introduction of a weekly open mic night\, we are delighted to offer even more opportunities for music lovers and artists to come together\, as well as a space where seasoned performers can try out their newest original pieces and where up-and-coming musicians can get used to performing for a crowd\,” Skolnick added. \n“NOOM is thrilled to partner with the Folk Music Society of Huntington and the Cinema Arts Centre and lay the groundwork for a weekly opportunity for original songwriters and performers to present their original songs in a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere\,” said Toby Tobias\, a Huntington-based singer-songwriter who launched the open mic series at a small coffee shop in Northport in the fall of 2013. One of the longest running weekly original open mics on Long Island\, NOOM has reincarnated itself at quite a few North Shore locations through the years — most recently at Finley’s in Huntington. \nAlthough the COVID-19 pandemic precluded NOOM from taking place in-person since March 2020\, songwriter Richard Parr has been livestreaming the open mic every week since then and is also playing a major role now that it has resumed in-person. “We invite singer-songwriters of varying skill levels and those who love live music\, to gather at the Cinema Arts Centre to listen to songwriters\, dedicated to the craft of writing and singing their songs\, play and talk about their original music in an environment of goodwill and open-mindedness\,” said Tobias. He noted that each NOOM will also include a featured 20-minute performance by a known/emerging local or touring songwriter starting at around 8:00pm.  “I am very excited to be a part of this\,” he said. \nMichael Kornfeld\, longtime president of the Folk Music Society of Huntington\, shares their excitement. “FMSH is delighted to extend its partnerships with both NOOM and the Cinema Arts Centre and to help provide opportunities for local singer-songwriters to share their music with our community\,” he said. “NOOM has been an Acoustic Ally of FMSH for a number of years. We’ve cross-promoted each other’s events and presented a couple of joint livestreams over the past two years.” \nAffording local artists opportunities to share their talents with appreciative audiences in an intimate listening room atmosphere was the initial impetus behind the nonprofit presenting organization’s Hard Luck Café concert series many years ago\, Kornfeld noted. That series now features a mix of local\, regional and national touring artists. The Cinema Arts Centre has partnered with the Folk Music Society of Huntington and hosted the monthly Hard Luck Café concerts in its Sky Room for more than a decade. \nJon Goldstein photo credit:  Michael Kornfeld

SUMMARY:Hard Luck Café Holiday Show
DESCRIPTION:Long-Island-based singer-songwriters Pete Mancini\, Nico Padden\, Rorie Kelly\, and Delaney Hafener of The Belle Curves will share the bill during the monthly Hard Luck Café series co-presented by the Folk Music Society of Huntington and the Cinema Arts Centre (423 Park Avenue\, Huntington) in the Cinema’s Sky Room on Wednesday\, December 21\, from 7-10 p.m. An open mic precedes the concert. \n \n                             Pete Mancini                                                              Nico Padden \n                              \n               Rorie Kelly                                             Delaney Hafener of The Belle Curves \n  \nPete Mancini got his start as frontman and songwriter of Butchers Blind\, a critically acclaimed rock band from NYC.  In 2017\, he released his debut solo album\, Foothill Freeway\, which explored the Americana influences that were a hallmark of his former band. The album garnered rave reviews from NPR\, No Depression\, and Newsday. His follow-up albums have also been met with critical acclaim. Over the years\, Mancini has opened for acts such as Jimmy Webb\, Blues Traveler\, Gin Blossoms\, and Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes. \nNico Padden is a one-woman folk-rock riot. Ben Folds said she has “a big voice\, gorgeous voice\,” and that her song\, “Pirate Queen\,” is “original and classic at the same time.” Her songs have been compared to Alanis Morissette’s work in Newsday\, and Smithtown Matters News called her a “soulful singer & lyricist.”  Her newest album is a mix of Americana\, vintage pop/rock\, and folk that celebrates the strength of the fierce\, brave women in her life. \nRorie Kelly is an award-winning singer/songwriter/ladybeast from Long Island. Her mission in life is to spread healing through art\, and to remind you to love yourself with the fierceness of a kitten that doesn’t know it is tiny.  Her songwriting looks deeply into topics like self-worth\, growth and letting go\, and how our culture treats people who don’t fit the mainstream “default.” A powerhouse performer\, Rorie gigs frequently\, lighting up stages with her fiery vocals and her sense of humor. \nDelaney Hafener has crafted a unique sound inspired by the many traditions of Americana\, complementing introspective lyrics and a songwriting style that can be reminiscent of both the Laurel Canyon and Bakersfield music scenes. Her music touches on themes of self-doubt\, progressive politics\, identity\, and disaffection\, working to create a distinctly youthful folk aesthetic. \n  \nTickets are $20 ($15 for Cinema Arts Centre/FMSH members) and can be purchased online at http://cinemaartscentre.org or at the Cinema Arts Centre box office now through the evening of the event. \nNote: The FMSH annual members’ meeting will take place at 6pm.
