SUMMARY:Hard Luck Café: A COUPLE OF DUOS: Princess Peapod -and- The Whispering Tree
DESCRIPTION:A Couple of Duos (LI’s own Princess Peapod and Beacon\, NY’s The Whispering Tree) will be the featured performers during the monthly Hard Luck Café series co-presented by the Folk Music Society of Huntington and the Cinema Arts Centre (423 Park Avenue\, Huntington)\, in the Cinema’s Sky Room on Wednesday\, April 15\, from 7-10 p.m.  An open mic\, for which sign-up opens at 6:30 p.m.\, precedes the concert.  Tickets are $26 ($20 for Cinema Arts Centre/FMSH members) and can be purchased online at https://cinemaartscentre.org or at the Cinema Arts Centre box office now through the evening of the event. \n \nMichele Frimmer and David Cook of Princess Peapod \nPrincess Peapod is a lively\, Huntington-based acoustic duo featuring the rich\, linen-textured vocals of Michele Frimmer and the inventive harmonies and multi-layered guitar style of David Cook. Princess Peapod combines a fresh lyrical approach with enough crunch and groove to make for third-millennium folk at its best. The husband-and-wife duo’s imaginative\, often reflective\, and occasionally quirky songwriting appeals to young and old alike. With their feet on the ground and heads in the clouds\, David and Michele’s candid performances are a joyful expression of the moment. \nPrincess Peapod began casually doing a mix of folk and kitschy 1960s cover tunes. As the pair began playing the coffeehouse and bookstore circuit in the New York metro area\, they developed into an astute songwriting team – able to work together in perfect sync. Princess Peapod’s critically acclaimed self-titled debut CD has been played on a number of folk and acoustic radio programs. A few live performance videos may be viewed on the duo’s website\, princesspeapod.com. \n \nElie Brangbour and Eleanor Kleiner of The Whispering Tree \nThe Whispering Tree is the contemporary folk duo of singer-songwriter Eleanor Kleiner and multi-instrumentalist Elie Brangbour.  The couple have been crafting and performing richly immersive folk music brimming with evocative lyrics\, haunting vocals\, and a panoramic musicality since 2007. The Whispering Tree has earned a number of accolades and much critical acclaim including being selected for coveted official showcases at both Northeast and Southwest Regional Folk Alliance (NERFA and SWRFA) conferences\, being Kerrville New Folk finalists\, participating in the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival’s Emerging Artist Showcase\, being named winners of a Philadelphia Songwriters’ Project competition\, and performing on Pete Seeger and Lorre Wyatt’s A More Perfect Union. \nPrior to and following the success of Invisible Forces\, its fourth recording (which debuted at #1 on the International Folk DJ charts in September 2018)\, the duo toured extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe up until the pandemic in 2020.  After a hiatus\, The Whispering Tree released its latest album\, Bones of Better Days\, in October 2025\, which was the second-most-played album and featured the #1 song on folk radio that month\, according to the monthly folk radio charts compiled by Folk Alliance International. More information and videos may be found on the duo’s website\, thewhisperingtree.com.

SUMMARY:Hard Luck Café: Tom Chapin
DESCRIPTION:Tom Chapin will take the stage at the monthly Hard Luck Café concert co-presented by the Folk Music Society of Huntington and the Cinema Arts Centre (423 Park Avenue\, Huntington\,  NY) in the Cinema’s Sky Room on Wednesday\, May 20\, from 7pm-10pm.   A 7pm open mic\, for which sign-up begins at 6:30pm\, precedes the 8pm concert.  Tickets are $32 ($25 for Cinema Arts Centre/FMSH members) and can be purchased online at https://cinemaartscentre.org or at the Cinema Arts Centre box office now through the evening of the event. \n \nIn a career that spans six decades\, 29 albums\, and three Grammy awards\, Chapin has covered an incredible amount of creative ground. In addition to his work as a recording artist\, concert performer\, storyteller and activist\, he’s performed on Broadway and worked extensively in television\, radio and film.\n\nThe son of noted jazz drummer and teacher Jim Chapin and the grandson of author/critic Kenneth Burke and portrait painter James Chapin\, Tom grew up in a family that encouraged artistic pursuits. He began performing professionally as a teenager in the early 1960s\, playing in Greenwich Village folk clubs alongside his siblings Harry Chapin and Steve Chapin as The Chapin Brothers\, and then began a prolific solo career beginning in the 1970s. \nChapin built a devoted following through songs that blend humor\, storytelling\, and social awareness. He later became a pioneer in family music\, creating sophisticated\, message-driven songs that resonate with children and adults alike\, earning multiple Grammy nominations and widespread acclaim. Still actively recording\, his upcoming album Songs of Hope (2026) continues his tradition of thoughtful\, uplifting songwriting\, brought to life with a wide circle of collaborators and musicians. \nHailed as “one of the great personalities in contemporary folk music” by The New York Times\, Tom was voted Best Male Artist in the 2018 International Acoustic Music Awards and last performed for FMSH that year — sharing a bill with his talented daughters\, The Chapin Sisters. He  previously performed solo several years earlier.\n\nAmong Tom’s latest songs are two co-writes with John Forster — “No Kings\, No Kings” and “These Are My Hymns.”\n\n

SUMMARY:Phil Ochs: There But for Fortune -- Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:For the first time since its initial release some 15 years ago\, the Folk Music Society of Huntington joins with the Cinema Arts Centre (423 Park Avenue\, Huntington) on Monday\, June 8\, at 7:30pm\, in presenting Phil Ochs: There But for Fortune\, a documentary about the iconic American troubadour who sought the bright lights of fame and social justice in equal measure over the course of a meteoric music career that spanned two decades. It was a contradiction that eventually tore him apart. From youthful idealism to rage to pessimism\, the arc of Phil Ochs’ life paralleled that of the turbulent times in which he lived\, and the anger\, satire and righteous indignation that drove his music also drove him to dark despair.  \nPhil Ochs: There But For Fortune was originally produced as part of PBS Television’s Emmy Award-winning American Masters series and also screened for two nights at the Cinema Arts Centre in partnership with FMSH. The documentary features commentary by Joan Baez\, Billy Bragg\, Tom Hayden\, Christopher Hitchens\, Sean Penn\, Pete Seeger\, Peter Yarrow and others – interspersed with performance clips of Ochs.  Described as “enthralling and fascinating” by Paper Magazine\, the film paints what Entertainment Weekly calls “an essential portrait of an artist who ought to be better known.”   \nOf the documentary\, Sonny Ochs\, Phil’s sister and a veteran folk DJ\, told AcousticMusicScene.com in 2011: “It is really interesting because it shows Phil against a background of the times\, and it doesn’t try to hide his blemishes. It is very honest and strong which is why audiences seem to like it so much.” \nTickets for Phil Ochs: There But for Fortune are $18; $11 for Cinema Arts Centre/FMSH members and may be purchased online at cinemaartscentre.org or at the box office up until the screening on June 8.

SUMMARY:Hard Luck Café: Phil Ochs Song Night (feat. Greg Greenway\, Reggie Harris\, and Pat Wictor)
DESCRIPTION:Phil Ochs photo © Robert Berkowitz / RSB Image Works \nA Phil Ochs Song Night featuring Greg Greenway\, Reggie Harris\, and Pat Wictor will close out the 2025-2026 season of the monthly Hard Luck Café concert co-presented by the Folk Music Society of Huntington and the Cinema Arts Centre (423 Park Avenue\, Huntington\,  NY) in the Cinema’s Sky Room on Wednesday\, June 17\, from 7pm-10pm.  Tickets are $32 ($25 for Cinema Arts Centre/FMSH members) and can be purchased online at https://cinemaartscentre.org or at the Cinema Arts Centre box office now through the evening of the event (if still available). \nPhil Ochs was an American troubadour who passionately believed that he and his music could help change the world. Many of his songs became anthems for the anti-war movement during the turbulent 1960s\, and his music continues to influence and inspire songwriters today – 50 years after his death. Among his best-known songs are “Changes\,” “I Ain’t Marching Anymore\,” “Small Circle of Friends\,” “There But For Fortune\,” and “When I’m Gone.” With the U.S. engaged in another foreign war today as it was in the 1960s\, Phil Ochs’ music is as relevant now as it was then. \nOver the years\, the Folk Music Society has presented several Phil Ochs Song Nights that feature talented artists who perform both Phil’s songs and their own to show that the art of topical songwriting is still alive and well. Singer-Songwriters Greg Greenway\, Reggie Harris and Pat Wictor were part of FMSH’s last one in 2019 and will grace the stage at the Cinema Arts Centre’s Sky Room on June 17. \n  \n \nL-R:  Pat Wictor\, Reggie Harris\, and Greg Greenway \nAbout the evening’s featured artists: \nGreg Greenway – Originally from Richmond\, VA and based in Massachusetts\, Greg combines instrumental expertise\, soulful and moving vocals\, and powerful poetry in his music. A multi-instrumentalist\, he plays guitar\, piano and ukulele. Greg also was part of the folk harmony trio Brother Sun\, performs Deeper Than the Skin shows with Reggie Harris\, and is entirely himself. \nReggie Harris – Hailing from Philadelphia\, Reggie is a songwriter\, an engaging storyteller\, an educator\, and a civil rights advocate. His concert performances are infused with joy\, while his songs rise with echoes of the Civil Rights Movement\, Pete Seeger and Bernice Johnson Reagon. He also performs Deeper Than the Skin shows with Greg Greenway. \nPat Wictor – Born in Venezuela\, Pat has lived all over the world but calls New York home. His otherworldly musicianship has made him a much in-demand studio musician on his passion\, the slide guitar. With flowing red hair and Zen-like calm\, audiences love his understated presence\, his beautiful songs\, and the magic of his slide. Pat was formerly part of the folk harmony trio Brother Sun. \nHere’s a link to view a video of Greg Greenway performing Phil Ochs’ “No More Songs\,” accompanied by Reggie Harris and Pat Wictor during a previous Phil Ochs Song Night presented by FMSH:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cj4w9l83Evc \nHere’s a link to view a video of Pat Wictor performing Phil Ochs’ “William Butler Yeats Visits Lincoln Park and Escapes Unscathed” during a previous Phil Ochs Song Night presented by FMSH: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1kyPCGXws0 \nAnd here’s one of Phil Ochs’ “What’s That I Hear” performed by Reggie Harris – accompanied by Greg Greenway\, Tom Prasada-Rao and Pat Wictor – during another Phil Ochs Song Night on Long Island: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3APRtoVtqo

SUMMARY:June 19-21 -- Harry Chapin -- Cat's in the Cradle: The Song That Changed Our Lives
DESCRIPTION:The Cinema Arts Centre (423 Park Avenue\, Huntington) will present Harry Chapin – Cat’s in the Cradle: The Song That Changed Our Lives as follows: \nFriday\, June 19\, at 4:45pm \nSaturday\, June 20\, at 7pm \nSunday\, June 21\, at 4:45pm \nThe film tells the story of one of the most emotionally resonant songs in American history and the complex\, charismatic artist behind it\, Harry Chapin – who lived in Huntington with his family. Released in 1974\, “Cat’s in the Cradle” became an unexpected radio chart-topper\, cutting through a disco-dominated era with a haunting folk ballad about fatherhood\, regret\, and the passage of time. More than fifty years later\, the song’s impact is undiminished. \nUsing a blend of archival footage\, performance clips\, and interviews with Chapin’s family\, bandmates\, and a range of musicians and public figures that include Harry’s wife\, Sandy Chapin\, Billy Joel\, Pat Benatar\, Judy Collins\, Dee Snider (Twisted Sister)\, Darryl McDaniels (Run-DMC)\, Mandy Patinkin\, Robert Lamm (Chicago)\, Whitfield Crane (Ugly Kid Joe) and more\, Harry Chapin – Cat’s in the Cradle: The Song That Changed Our Lives traces Harry’s rise – from his breakout single “Taxi” in 1972\, through the whirlwind years of touring and recording that followed the success of “Cat’s in the Cradle.” More than just a biography of an artist\, the film is also a meditation on the enduring power of a song that has become part of the emotional vocabulary of generations. (The film runs 94 minutes.) \nTickets may be purchased in advance at the Cinema or online via its website: cinemaartscentre.org.
