DESCRIPTION:Long Island singer-songwriters Rorie Kelly\, Nico Padden\, and Christine Sweeney will share the stage at the monthly Hard Luck Café concert co-presented by the Folk Music Society of Huntington and the Cinema Arts Centre (423 Park Avenue\, Huntington\,  NY) in the Cinema’s Sky Room on Wednesday\, December 17\, from 7pm-10pm.  The 8pm concert will be preceded by a 7pm open mic for which sign-up begins at 6:30pm.  Tickets are $25 ($20 for Cinema Arts Centre/FMSH members) and can be purchased online at cinemaartscentre.org or at the box office now through the evening of the event. \n  \n \nL-R:  Rorie Kelly\, Nico Padden\, and Christine Sweeney \nRorie Kelly is an award-winning singer/songwriter/ladybeast from Long Island. Her mission in life is to spread healing through art\, and to remind you to love yourself with the fierceness of a kitten that doesn’t know it is tiny. Her music has been featured in film and TV shows\, received radio airplay around the world\, and led her to perform at the Obama White House in 2016. \nHer most recent album\, Shadow Work\, is about shining a light in the darkness and healing wounds. The production is big and dark\, and performed largely by just two people – Rorie herself\, and her father/production partner\, Kevin Kelly. “It was exciting to us to see just how much power we could pack into these songs as two humans in a studio with a vision\,” says Rorie. The songwriting looks deeply into topics like self-worth\, growth and letting go\, and how our culture treats people who don’t fit the mainstream “default.” The opening song\, “Full Moon Charm Bracelet\,” was featured in the 2021 film Hearts and Vines\, which won a Telly Award for Use of Music.  \n************ \nNico Padden is a NYC-based\, one-woman folk-rock riot. Ben Folds said she has “a big voice\, gorgeous voice\,” and that her song “Pirate Queen” is “original and classic at the same time.” Her 2022 album of the same title received positive reviews from Americana Highways\, Glide Magazine\, and Guitar Girl magazine\, and the album frequently made the NACC Top 30. \nThe work is a mix of Americana\, pop/rock\, and folk that celebrates the strength of the fierce\, brave women in her life. “Pirate Queen” is about taking back the crown that is rightfully yours\, even if by slightly unorthodox means. Pirate Queen is the nickname given to Padden by her friends and fans\, and it represents who she is—musical leader\, woman who defies gender norms\, outspoken feminist\, and lover/protector of those around her. Her music is both tender and fierce\, laden with harmonies\, powerful choruses\, and catchy hooks. \nPadden’s musical roots run deep — she comes from a music teacher family and earned a degree in opera performance before focusing on her career as a singer/songwriter. Her musical activities vary widely: her choral arrangement of her original song “White Flag” went viral in 2018 and as a result\, has been performed by choirs across the United States and Canada. She is the author of Ukulele Rockstars\, a method book for teaching ukulele\, and she is the composer of “Romeo & Juliet\, the Rock musical.” She is a dog lover and an outspoken advocate for people with Celiac disease. \n************ \nHow did stop-you-in-your-tracks vocalist and songwriter Christine Sweeney go from singing along with R&B radio and tapes by Whitney Houston\, Mariah Carey\, and Destiny’s Child as a kid; to choice slots at the Connecticut Folk Fest and Falcon Ridge Folk Fest\, WFUV DJ John Platt’s tastemaker On Your Radar concert series\, and bills with Graham Parker and Jill Sobule? \nShe sets the scene: “I had some cassettes and would also tape songs from the radio. I would play them over and over again\, focusing in on singing to a small part of the song. Rewind\, play\, repeat.”  Sweeney would go on to refine her voice as well as study music theory and songwriting at SUNY New Paltz.  To her\, the R&B vocal influence isn’t unnatural in the folk setting. The result of this influence reminds her fans of Susan Tedeschi\, Brandi Carlile\, Sheryl Crow\, KT Tunstall\, or Grace Potter\, with music that grooves and rocks but also tells her story. \nSweeney’s new album\, Heart In a Hurry\, is a culmination of this pairing of folk and soul\, with generous dashes of blues\, pop\, Americana\, and yes\, R&B\, in sharp\, open-hearted new songs\, some drawn from life lessons learned the hard way and shared with her listeners.  Sweeney’s songs can exist in a big\, full-band milieu or played solo at a hushed listening room\, with equal impact—and the songs were road-tested on both types of stages before taking them into the studio. The folk scene has embraced Sweeney’s music\, with showcases at NERFA and Folk Alliance International Conference. \nWhether rocking a festival stage with her full band or a hushed\, candle-lit folk club\, Christine Sweeney will give you goosebumps with her voice and then hit you with the depth of her storytelling. DESCRIPTION:Port Washington’s Landmark on Main Street will go “Just Wild About Harry” for a third year in a row on Tuesday\, December 2\, at 7:30pm\, as nearly three dozen of Long Island’s top musicians and songwriters will pay tribute to Harry Chapin\, the late Grammy-Award-winning singer-songwriter and social activist\, on the stage of the Jeanne Rimsky Theater. \nThe tribute concert will feature 18 acts – including concert organizer Stuart Markus and his trio\, Gathering Time – performing some of Chapin’s classics including “Taxi” and “Cat’s in the Cradle\,” plus many lesser hits and fan favorites like “Mr. Tanner” and “Shooting Star.” \nMarkus calls the concert a “Birthday Bash\,” as Chapin would have turned 83 on December 7. As they’ve done for the past 20 years\, participating artists will be encouraged to put their own interpretations on his songs. “We’ve had some amazing arrangements\, from old-time fiddle-folk to country\, from torch-song style to hard rock\,” Markus added. \nWhile this will be a ticketed event\, all revenues above the cost of producing the show will be donated to Long Island Cares\, the food bank founded by Chapin. The past two years’ shows at Landmark raised approximately $15\,000 total\, plus over half a ton of food. \nNo named benefactor has come forward this year\, so the theatre would welcome sponsorships for the show\, said Floryn Glass Stock\, Landmark’s new programming director. “This show celebrates everything beautiful about the arts and what community can do together — a foundation of Landmark’s mission. Please come\, donate as generously as you are able to\, and feel the joy that only music can bring us!” she added. \nA minimum $20 donation per ticket is suggested\, although additional donations are greatly appreciated. As always\, the performers will be donating their talents. Long Island Cares will also be collecting non-perishable food donations\, and selling T-shirts and other merchandise. \nLong Island music royalty is turning out in force to support this most worthy cause. Confirmed to date are: Wonderous Stories\, Gathering Time\, Roger Street Friedman\, Martha Trachtenberg\, Patricia Shih\, Christine Solimeno\, Media Crime\, Roger Silverberg\, Grand Folk Railroad\, Robin Greenstein\, Lora Kendall\, Terry Seidl\, Karen Bella\, Debra Lynne\, Matthew Ponsot\, and Gerald Bair\, plus newcomers Princess Peapod and Mountain Maidens with James O’Malley. \nAs in past years\, the Just Wild About Harry concert is being co-promoted by the Folk Music Society of Huntington\, of which Markus is a board member. She shines in her own lyrical compositions and in her singular choices of other artists\, especially those of Joni Mitchell.”  That’s how Judy Collins describes Kirsten\, whom she has invited to open for her in concert a number of times. \nKirsten has drawn comparisons to such timeless singers as Collins\, Mitchell and Joan Baez\, while her vocal range and ability allow her to move seamlessly across genres – broadening the scope of her performances. \nShe’s been a finalist in the prestigious Kerrville New Folk Competition and an audience-voted “Most Wanted” artist following a Grassy Hill Emerging Artist Showcase at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival. She has had coveted official juried showcases at several conferences hosted by regional affiliates of Folk Alliance International\, and has showcased her talents during Singer-Songwriter Cape May and as part of NERFA Presents Young Folk at the Mariposa and Philadelphia Folk Festivals. In 2020\, she was one of five artists selected to receive a grant from the Joe’s Pub Working Group – an artist development program of The Public Theater in NYC.  Kirsten also has spent some time in Nashville\, where she has performed at the iconic Bluebird Café\, whose founder\, Amy Kurland\, says: “She is a very special artist. Her voice\, her songwriting\, and her delivery make her stand out to me.” Paul Shaffer has expressed similar sentiments: “I once saw Kirsten Maxwell take the stage in a raucous bar. The patrons were there to drink\, not listen. She began a delicate ballad\, and by the third line\, she had them in the palm of her hand. DESCRIPTION:Joe Crookston\, a widely acclaimed singer-songwriter and guitarist based in Ithaca\, New York\, returns to Long Island on Wednesday\, September 17 to open the 2025-2026 season of the monthly Hard Luck Café concert series. Co-presented by the Folk Music Society of Huntington and the Cinema Arts Centre (423 Park Avenue\, Huntington\, NY\, 631-423-7610)\, the concert takes place in the Cinema’s Sky Room from 7pm-10pm.  An open mic\, for which sign-up begins at 6:30pm\, precedes the 8pm concert.  Tickets are $32 ($25 for Cinema Arts Centre/FMSH members) and may be purchased online at cinemaartscentre.org or at the box office through the evening of the show. \n \nAn engaging and energetic live performer\, Crookston has played such notable music venues and festivals as Club Passim\, Godfrey Daniels\, The Guthrie Center\, the Kerrville Folk Festival\, Mariposa Folk Festival\, The Philadelphia Folk Festival\, and 30A Songwriters Festival\, among others. He toured with the late Gordon Lightfoot in 2021-2022 and has performed on Long Island a number of times since being among the artists voted “Most Wanted to Return” following the Grassy Hill Emerging Artist Showcase at the 2007 Falcon Ridge Folk Festival. \nCrookston has released eight studio albums of award-winning songs\, many of which have been covered by other musicians. Two of his songs\, “Blue Tattoo” and “Brooklyn in July\,” have been made into feature films. His album Able\, Baker\, Charlie & Dog – a collection of songs inspired by stories ordinary New Yorkers from the Finger Lakes region related to him during his year-long travels under a songwriting grant from The Rockefeller Foundation — was awarded Album of the Year by Folk Alliance International during the 2009 International Folk Music Awards\, in recognition of the extensive folk radio airplay that it received over the prior year.  He also was chosen as Folk Alliance International’s Artist in Residence and invited to collaborate and perform “The Letters of Florence Hemphill” as part of a keynote gathering featuring Judy Collins during its 2016 international conference.  \nBesides writing and performing his songs\, Crookston taught songwriting and guitar at The Ashokan Center and The Swannanoa Gathering\, among others. DESCRIPTION:Following on the success of last year’s show\, the Just Wild About Harry tribute concert to Harry Chapin will return to the Huntington stage that bears his name on Sunday\, July 27\, at 8 p.m.  The show\, which showcases nearly three-dozen Long-Island-based musicians and songwriters\, will take place at the Chapin Rainbow Stage in Heckscher Park\, located off Prime Avenue and Main Street (Route 25A). Each act will perform its own interpretation of a song by the late Grammy-Award-winning songsmith\, humanitarian and anti-hunger activist who called Huntington home.  \n“I had in mind that I’d consider it a success if the audience filled the viewing area within the fence\, and we achieved that and beyond\,” said Stuart Markus\, who organizes the show and serves as its emcee. “It’s a testament to how beloved in memory Harry still is in Huntington.” \nMarkus’ trio Gathering Time will perform Chapin’s best-known song\, “Cat’s in the Cradle\,” while 17 other acts will take on his other hits and fan favorites. These will include “Taxi\,” “Flowers Are Red\,” and “Mr. Tanner\,” plus some of Chapin’s more obscure songs\, as well. \nAlthough the concert is free\, attendees are asked to bring donations of nonperishable food to support Long Island Cares\, Inc.\, the regional food bank founded by Chapin in 1980 — the year before his tragic death in an auto accident.  Just Wild About Harry is presented by the Huntington Arts Council as part of the 60th annual Huntington Summer Arts Festival that is produced by the Town of Huntington. The Folk Music Society of Huntington\, on whose board of directors Markus serves\, is providing promotional assistance for the concert. \n“All the performers are pro-caliber\, full-time and part-time musicians who perform regularly at local venues and/or on the folk circuit\,” Markus said. “Throughout the show’s two decade-long history\, I’ve always encouraged them to treat the songs as their own — however they imagine them. This has resulted in some very creative interpretations.” \nOther performers in the show include Judith Zweiman; Martha Trachtenberg; Karen Bella; Roger Silverberg; Debra Lynne; Patricia Shih & Stephen Fricker; Roger Street Friedman; Media Crime; Lisa Ann & Akiva Wharton; Judy Merrick; Christine Solimeno; Grand Folk Railroad; Robinson Treacher; Gerald Bair; Wonderous Stories; Toby Tobias; Mara Levine; and Matthew Ponsot\, in various ensembles. Long Island Cares staff and volunteers will collect donations of non-perishable food at a tent near the entrance to the Chapin Rainbow Stage\, where t-shirts and Harry Chapin CDs will also be available — along with literature about the nonprofit organization’s programs and services.   \nConcertgoers are advised to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets to Hecksher Park for the show that will be held rain or shine\, precluded only by thunderstorms. \n
