SUMMARY:Hard Luck Café: Take 2 (Candice Baranello & James O'Malley) -and- Sandy & Steve Edwards
DESCRIPTION:A Pair of Duos:  Take 2 and Sandy & Steve Edwards will share the stage during the monthly Hard Luck Café concert series co-presented by the Folk Music Society of Huntington and the Cinema Arts Centre (423 Park Avenue\, Huntington) in the Cinema’s Sky Room on Wednesday\, February 19\, from 7pm-10pm.  An open mic\, for which sign-up is at 6:30pm\, precedes the concert.  Tickets are $20 ($15 for Cinema Arts Centre/FMSH members) and may be purchased online at cinemaartscentre.org or at the box office through the evening of the show. \n \nCandice Baranello and James O’Malley of Take 2 \nTake 2 features Candice Baranello and James O’Malley\, two talented artists who have each been part of the Long Island acoustic music scene for a number of years. Candice Baranello is an expressive singer and multi-instrumentalist (ukulele\, banjo\, guitar\, and dulcimer) who also is founding member of Mountain Maidens\, a traditional folk trio known for its vocal harmonies accompanied by a wide array of instruments.  James O’Malley has composed some of the most endearing songs around\, and delivers them in heartfelt fashion in a smooth tenor voice and subtle\, intricate guitar style that was influenced by legendary folk guitarist Eric Darling.  O’Malley is a favored performer among LI’s dedicated and discerning listening crowd. His music has been featured on radio stations across the country\, with a new solo album set for release later this year. Take 2 features two dynamic voices coming together to bring their joy into your lives. \n \nSteve & Sandy Edwards \nSandy & Steve Edwards have been playing music together since they met in 1994. Both are singer-songwriters who enjoy accompanying each other and adding sweet harmonies. Along with cover tunes in the folk realm\, this Northport-based married couple play original acoustic music that is a mix of tall tales\, real tales and\, often\, features themes of encouraging the human spirit. A longtime Hank Williams fan\, Steve Edwards was introduced to traditional country music by his dad\, while Sandy Edwards cites Neil Young\, CSN\, James Taylor\, and the Moody Blues as influences. The couple’s writing styles reflect down-to-earth family connections\, fantasies of debauchery\, aspirations of spiritual liberation\, and poking fun at life in general.  The Edwards’ have run open mics and co-ran & performed in Happenings on Main Street in Northport. They frequently played the Acoustic Stage on the Hill during the Long Island Fall Festival in Huntington and have shared their musical talents at several charitable events. Sandy & Steve Edwards recently released a new CD entitled Taking In The Sun.

SUMMARY:Hard Luck Café: Lonesome Traveler + Bill Lauter
DESCRIPTION:Lonesome Traveler — a narrative musical about legendary folk groups The Weavers and The Almanac Singers and featuring the songs of iconic folk singers Lee Hays\, Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger — will be performed by Long Islanders Ira Perlman and Denise Romas during the monthly Hard Luck Café concert series co-presented by the Folk Music Society of Huntington and the Cinema Arts Centre (423 Park Avenue\, Huntington) in the Cinema’s Sky Room on Wednesday\, January 15\, from 7pm-10pm. Huntington-based singer and guitarist Bill Lauter will perform a short opening set featuring his renditions of songs from that era. \nAn open mic\, for which sign-up is at 6:30pm\, precedes the concert.  Tickets are $20 ($15 for Cinema Arts Centre/FMSH members) and may be purchased online at cinemaartscentre.org or at the box office through the evening of the show. \nHays\, Guthrie and Seeger performed together with The Almanac Singers beginning in the 1940s. Their songs were part of the musical soundtrack for the American labor movement and the struggles for social justice\, influenced generations of other musicians\, and have been popularized and taught in public schools throughout the country.  In Lonesome Traveler\, you’ll hear and might even sing along to such classics as “Goodnight Irene\,” “If I Had a Hammer\,” “Talking Union Blues\,” “Tzena\, Tzena\,” and “Union Maid.” The songs will be interspersed with narrative based on/excerpted from Doris Willens’ biography of Lee Hays entitled Lonesome Traveler\, which was also Hays’ theme song. \nA past president of the Folk Music Society of Huntington\, Ira Perlman has appeared at numerous Long Island folk venues performing both well-known and obscure folk songs. Denise Romas — who immersed herself in the music of Peter\, Paul and Mary and Joan Baez at an early age — performs a repertoire of original songs and covers at venues across Long Island.

SUMMARY:Just Wild About Harry: A Tribute to Harry Chapin by Long Island Singer/Songwriters
DESCRIPTION:Port Washington’s Landmark on Main Street will again go Just Wild About Harry on Tuesday\, December 3\, at 7:30pm\, as nearly three dozen of Long Island’s top musicians and songwriters will perform the music of Harry Chapin\, the late Grammy-Award-winning singer-songwriter and social activist\, on the stage of the Jeanne Rimsky Theater. \nThe tribute concert\, returning for a second year to the Port Washington venue\, will feature 18 acts – including concert organizer Stuart Markus and his trio Gathering Time – performing some of Chapin’s classics including “Taxi” and “Cat’s in the Cradle\,” plus many lesser hits and fan favorites like “WOLD” and “Story of a Life.” \nMarkus said the December date will be a “Birthday Bash\,” as Chapin would have turned 82 on Dec. 7. As they’ve done for the past 20 years\, participating artists will be encouraged to put their own interpretations on his songs. “We’ve had some amazing arrangements\, from folky to country\, from torch-song style to hard rock\,” Markus added. \nWhile this will be a ticketed event\, all revenues above the cost of producing the show will be donated to Long Island Cares\, the food bank founded by Chapin. Last year’s event raised $5\,101 in direct ticket sales and donations.  A generous Landmark donor covered all production expenses and a matching pledge on the LI Cares side brought the total to $10\,202.  In addition\, more than 600 pounds of nonperishable food items were collected. \nNo named benefactor has come forward this year\, so the theatre would welcome sponsorships for the show\, said Executive Director Laura Mogul. “Landmark is committed to serving our shared community in every way possible.  It’s an honor and pleasure for us to be part of this event that celebrates the life and good work of Harry Chapin.” she added. \nA minimum $20 donation per ticket is suggested\, although additional donations are greatly appreciated.  As always\, the performers will be donating their talents. \nLong Island Cares will also be collecting non-perishable food donations and selling T-shirts and other merchandise. \nLong Island music royalty is turning out in force to support this most worthy cause.  Confirmed to date are: Wonderous Stories\, Gathering Time\, Roger Street Friedman\, Frank Walker\, Joanne Amante\, Martha Trachtenberg\, Media Crime\, Robinson Treacher\, Hank Stone\, Miles & Mafale\, Roger Silverberg\, Grand Folk Railroad\, Lora Kendall\, and newcomer Terry Seidl\, with more to come. \nAs in past years\, the Just Wild About Harry concert is being co-promoted by the Folk Music Society of Huntington\, of which Markus is a board member. Harry Chapin lived in Huntington with his family. \nFor more information\, see www.landmarkonmainstreet.org/event/just-wild-about-harry-2024/

SUMMARY:Hard Luck Café: Miles to Dayton
DESCRIPTION:Miles to Dayton (milestodayton.net) will take the stage during the monthly Hard Luck Café concert series co-presented by the Folk Music Society of Huntington and the Cinema Arts Centre (423 Park Avenue\, Huntington) in the Cinema’s Sky Room on Wednesday\, November 20\, from 7pm-10pm.  An open mic\, for which sign-up is at 6:30pm\, precedes the concert.   \nTickets are $25 ($20 for Cinema Arts Centre/FMSH members) and may be purchased online at cinemaartscentre.org or at the box office through the evening of the show. \nMiles to Dayton’s music happens at a personal level\, their message of love blending elements of folk\, rock\, classical\, and funk into an irresistible invitation. The M2D recipe is simple: four-part vocal harmony\, clever songwriting\, improvisational violin and cello\, and an infectious rhythm section that stirs up the creative stew. \n\nAt the heart of their unique marriage of styles lies a real-life marriage: vocalist Krista Preddice shares the microphone with husband Jonathan Preddice\, who\, in addition to being the principal songwriter for the group\, also shines on vocals\, guitar and cello. Bassist Dave March (Krista’s brother) and dynamic violinists Leanne Strom and Alisa Rabbitt (Jon’s sisters) add depth to the vocal harmonies\, with Dave’s low\, soulful bass and the double violin soaring classical virtuosity providing the sonic bookends for the M2D sound. \n\nHaving built a large grassroots following of fans young and old\, Miles to Dayton has become a fixture on the Long Island music scene\, having headlined performances at the Patchogue Theater and sold out the Boulton Center\, with notable gigs at the Paramount Theatre\, Great South Bay Music Festival and the NoFo Rock and Folk Festival. They’ve been the featured artist at the Acoustic Long Island Podcast and Summer Concert\, emerging artist at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival\, and have performed in intimate listening rooms such as Club Passim in Boston\, and the Living Room in NYC. \nEqually at home in the acoustic or full band setup\, m2d has shared the stage with the likes of The Infamous Stringdusters\, Rhett Miller\, The Subdudes\, Jorma Kaukonen\, The Dirt Farmer Band\, Tom Paxton\, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes\, and Richie Havens\, to name a few.  The band has been featured in O\, The Oprah Magazine; ValsList; the Long Island Pulse; and the Lefsetz Letter. \n“A mix of folk\, country\, and classical music\, Miles to Dayton has a very polished sound reminiscent of Nickel Creek. Delivering four-part harmonies and improvisational violin and cello parts\, Miles to Dayton is stacked with solid musicianship and is definitely worth checking out.” — Relix Magazine \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Hard Luck Café: Scott Cook & Pamela Mae
DESCRIPTION:Scott Cook and Pamela Mae – Photo by Tina Dominic \nScott Cook (scottcook.net)\, an award-winning Canadian prairie roots balladeer based in Edmonton\, Alberta\, will be the featured artist during the monthly Hard Luck Café concert series co-presented by the Folk Music Society of Huntington and Cinema Arts Centre in the Cinema’s Sky Room (423 Park Avenue\, Huntington\, NY) on Wednesday\, October 16\, from 7-10 p.m.  The internationally touring  troubadour will be joined by Pamela Mae on upright bass and backing vocals. \nAn open mic\, for which sign-up starts at 6:30 p.m.\, precedes the 8 p.m. concert. Tickets are $25 ($20 for Cinema Arts Centre/FMSH members) and may be purchased online at cinemaartscentre.org or at the box office through the evening of the show. \n  \n \nScott Cook – Photo by Steven Teeuwsen \nCook — who delves into folk\, roots\, blues\, soul\, and country\, and accompanies himself on fingerstyle guitar and claw hammer banjo — quit his job as a kindergarten teacher in Taiwan in 2007 and moved into a minivan. He’s made his living as a troubadour ever since – touring almost incessantly across North America\, Europe\, Asia\, Australia\, New Zealand\, and elsewhere. He averages 150 concerts and a dozen summer festivals a year. Along the way\, he’s released seven albums of plainspoken\, keenly observant verse – with an eighth one coming soon. His most recent release\, Tangle of Souls\, comes packaged in a cloth-bound\, 240-page hardcover book of road stories and ruminations\, equal parts introspection and insurrection.  One of its tracks\, “Say Can You See\,” was the second-most-played song of 2020 on Folk Alliance International’s folk radio charts and took top honors in the folk category in both the 2020 Great American Song Contest and the 2020 UK Songwriting Competition. That year\, Cook also performed during a virtual Falcon Ridge Folk Festival after being voted a “Most Wanted to Return” artist following the Grassy Hill Emerging Artist Showcase at the prior year’s festival.  \n \nScott Cook and Pamela Mae – Photo by Justin McMurdo \nCook and his sweetheart\, Pamela Mae\, have been back on the road full-time since January 2022\, living in a camper van named Roadetta. Since then\, they’ve visited 43 states and eight Canadian provinces\, and also broadcast solar-powered livestreams from the back of the van during the pandemic. \n“As good a modern folkie as we have these days. A voice perfect for the genre.” \n                              — No Depression \n“He sings his heart and soul\, and in doing so let’s light flow into your own…truly one of Woody Guthrie’s children.” \n                            —RnR Magazine (UK) \n  \nVideo links: \n“Enough” \n“Dogs and Kids” \n“Further Down the Line”

SUMMARY:Hard Luck Café: Kirsten Maxwell
DESCRIPTION:Kirsten Maxwell (kirstenmaxwell.com)\, a multifaceted singer-songwriter who has been earning accolades and winning over audiences across the country\, returns to her hometown to kick off the 2024-2025 season of Hard Luck Café concerts co-presented by the Folk Music Society of Huntington and the Cinema Arts Centre (423 Park Avenue\, Huntington\,  NY) in the Cinema’s Sky Room on Wednesday\, September 18\, from 7pm-10pm.  \nAn open mic\, for which sign-up is at 6:30pm\, precedes the concert.  Tickets are $25 ($20 for Cinema Arts Centre/FMSH members) and can be purchased online at cinemaartscentre.org or at the box office now through the evening of the event. \n“Kirsten Maxwell is an amazing writer and powerful\, evocative singer whose performances are a sheer joy. She shines in her own lyrical compositions and in her singular choices of other artists\, especially those of Joni Mitchell.”  That’s how Judy Collins describes Kirsten\, whom she has invited to open for her in concert a number of times. \nKirsten has drawn comparisons to such timeless singers as Collins\, Mitchell and Joan Baez\, while her vocal range and ability allow her to move seamlessly across genres – broadening the scope of her performances. \nShe’s been a finalist in the prestigious Kerrville New Folk Competition and an audience-voted “Most Wanted” artist following a Grassy Hill Emerging Artist Showcase at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival. Kirsten took first place in a contest sponsored by the Rhode Island Songwriters Association (RUISA) in 2015 and was a winner in the 2016 South Florida Folk Festival Singer-Songwriter Competition. She has had coveted official juried showcases at several conferences hosted by regional affiliates of Folk Alliance International\, and has showcased her talents during Singer-Songwriter Cape May and as part of NERFA Presents Young Folk at the Mariposa and Philadelphia Folk Festivals. In 2020\, she was one of five artists selected to receive a grant from the Joe’s Pub Working Group – an artist development program of The Public Theater in NYC.  Kirsten also has spent some time in Nashville\, where she has performed at the iconic Bluebird Café\, whose founder\, Amy Kurland\, says: “She is a very special artist. Her voice\, her songwriting\, and her delivery make her stand out to me.” Paul Shaffer has expressed similar sentiments: “I once saw Kirsten Maxwell take the stage in a raucous bar. The patrons were there to drink\, not listen. She began a delicate ballad\, and by the third line\, she had them in the palm of her hand. Kirsten is a strikingly special performer.” \nKirsten’s evocative renderings\, coupled with her naturally passionate voice\, often bring audiences to tears.  Chris McKhool of Sultans of String\, an acclaimed Canadian instrumental ensemble\, says: “If I could sing like her\, I’d give up the violin.” \n
