SUMMARY:"Just Wild About Harry" Concert Set for December 4
DESCRIPTION:Photo Credit: Robert Berkowitz/RSBImageWorks.com \nMore than two dozen of Long Island’s top musicians and songwriters will take to the stage at Landmark on Main Street’s Jeanne Rimsky Theater in Port Washington\, NY to perform the music of Harry Chapin\, the late Grammy-Award-winning singer-songwriter and social activist\, on Monday\, December 4\, at 7:30 pm. The annual Just Wild About Harry tribute concert\, relocated to the Port Washington venue\, will feature 18 acts – including concert organizer Stuart Markus and his trio Gathering Time – performing some of Chapin’s classics including “Taxi” and “Cat’s in the Cradle\,” plus many lesser hits and fan favorites like “WOLD” and “Story of a Life.” Tickets are available through Landmark on Main Street. Admission is based on a sliding scale starting at $10. \nThis year’s tribute concert\, having been rained out on its original summer date marking the anniversary of his death and ultimately scrapped over the musicians’ objections to political signage at Eisenhower Park\, will be repurposed into a birthday celebration\, said concert organizer Stuart Markus. Chapin would have turned 81 on Dec. 7. \n“For 19 years\, the Long Island music community has come together to commemorate Harry by playing his songs around the anniversary of his tragic passing\,” Markus said. “This year\, we’ll be celebrating his life with a birthday bash.” Like in past shows\, participating artists will be encouraged to put their own interpretations on his songs. “We’ve had some amazing  arrangements\, from folky to country\, from torch-song style to hard rock\,” Markus added. \n \nWhile this will be a ticketed event\, all revenues above the cost of producing the show will be donated to Long Island Cares\, the food bank founded by Chapin. A donation pledged by philanthropist Roger Tilles will offset some of those costs\, said Landmark executive director Richard Mayer. “We’re honoring Harry Chapin’s legacy in the Jeanne Rimsky Theater.” As always\, the performers will be donating their talents. \nLong Island Cares will also be collecting non-perishable food donations and selling T-shirts and other merchandise. The concert has historically been a major fundraiser for the organization and has raised thousands of pounds of food donations. “We’re looking forward to welcoming everyone to Landmark on Main to celebrate the music and stories of our beloved founder\, Harry Chapin and we appreciate the food donations and support of the audience that will be joining us\,” said Paule Pachter\, the nonprofit organization’s chief executive officer. \nAs in past years\, the Just Wild About Harry concert is being co-promoted by the Folk Music Society of Huntington\, of which Markus is a board member. Harry Chapin lived in Huntington with his family. \n \nBesides Markus and Gathering Time\, this year’s roster of performers includes newcomers Matthew Ponsot\, Roger Silverberg\, and Lisa Ann & Akiva Wharton. Other performers include Frank Walker\, Roger Street Friedman\, Martha Trachtenberg\, Debra Lynn & Lora Kendal\, Media Crime\, Talya Smilowitz\, Joe Iadanza\, Miles & Mafale\, Robinson Treacher\, Robin Eve\, Joanne Amante\, Christine Solimeno\, Judith Zweiman\, Duane Michael Tucker\, Patricia Shih & Stephen Fricker\, Grand Folk Railroad\, and Robin Greenstein\, with the possibility of other acts to be added. Guest speakers will also offer brief remarks. \nThe Just Wild About Harry concert will be livestreamed via the links below.  The livestream will begin at 7:15pm\, and the concert is scheduled to begin at 7:30pm. \nFolk Music Society of  Huntington Facebook Page:  https://www.facebook.com/FMSHLongIsland \nHarry Chapin Foundation YouTube Channel:  https://www.youtube.com/live/VHfaR6vyzBw?si=aFYIJcn8gw0P8KPX \nHarry Chapin Foundation Facebook Page:  https://fb.me/e/6wBi5JCdC \n“Just Wild About Harry” Facebook Group:  https://fb.me/e/3qE9misrq \n“Harry Chapin Memories” Facebook Group:  https://fb.me/e/1Fc99vPHC \nHarry Chapin Music Facebook Page:  https://fb.me/e/9Five9E7f \n  \nThe stream will also be shared in the “Harry Chapin: Long Live Harry Chapin” Facebook Group:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/2202149890 and in the “Harry Chapin Fans” Facebook Group:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/230511524137319

SUMMARY:Hard Luck Café: Gathering Time
DESCRIPTION:Gathering Time (https://gathering-time.com/home) — an acclaimed internationally touring folk-rock harmony trio —  is the featured act during the monthly Hard Luck Café concert series co-presented by the Folk Music Society of Huntington and the Cinema Arts Centre (423 Park Avenue\, Huntington) in the Cinema’s Sky Room on Wednesday\, October 18\, from 7pm-10pm. An open mic\, for which sign-up is at 6:30pm\,  precedes the concert. Tickets are $20 ($15 for Cinema Arts Centre/FMSH members) and can be purchased online at https://cinemaartscentre.org or at the box office now through the evening of the event.  \nBased on Long Island\, Gathering Time performs a mix of original\, classic 20th century\, and traditional tunes.  Like a co-ed Crosby\, Stills & Nash\, the trio is known for its astute songwriting\, spirited and accomplished musicianship and a stellar vocal blend.   \nStuart Markus\, Christine Sweeney and Gerry McKeveny evince deep roots in 1960s and 1970s folk-rock\, with a healthy dash of traditional folk in the mix. Their on-stage chemistry makes clear that they take the music (if not themselves) very seriously\, yet their infectious energy wins over even fans who never considered themselves folkies.  \nGathering Time is among the few acts to have two successive  #1 and four successive top-five albums on the monthly folk radio charts now compiled by Folk Alliance International. Its most recent release\, Old Friends\, topped the albums chart in September 2020 and featured five of the month’s top 25 songs\, while its previous release\, Keepsake\, was the most-played album in March 2015 and featured the month’s #1 song. These followed on the heels of When One Door Closes  (#3 album in January 2014) and Red Apples and Gold (#5 album in September 2012). \nGathering Time has had a record five juried showcases at Northeast Regional Folk Alliance (NERFA) conferences and was one of three acts during the 2012 Falcon Ridge Folk Festival’s Grassy Hill Emerging Artists Showcase voted “Most Wanted to Return” in 2013. Although the trio has seen a couple of personnel changes since then\, Gathering Time continues to entertain and delight fans up and down the East Coast and beyond with both its concerts of mostly original songs and tribute shows featuring 1960s and 1970s classics.  \nJohn Platt\, host of WFUV’s Sunday Supper\, has hailed Gathering Time for its “harmonies that can charm the birds out of the trees\, strong original songs\, and a savvy repertoire of cover songs ranging from traditional folk to classic rock.”

SUMMARY:NorthShore Original Open Mic (NOOM) in the Sky Room at Huntington’s Cinema Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:Dave Rowe (daverowemusic.com) will be the featured performing songwriter during the NorthShore Original Open Mic (NOOM) on Wednesday\, September 27. Co-presented by the Cinema Arts Centre and the Folk Music Society of Huntington in the Cinema’s Sky Room (423 Park Avenue\, Huntington)\, the open mic runs from 7-10 p.m.\, with the featured artist performing a 30-minute set beginning around 8:15 p.m.  Sign-up starts at 6:30 p.m.  Although NOOM is free to attend\, donations will be gratefully accepted. \nDave is a traveling troubadour from Maine —a singer-songwriter and interpreter of traditional and modern song— who has graced stages all over the eastern seaboard and throughout America’s heartland during his 35-year career. Armed with a guitar\, a dream\, a quick wit\, a soaring tenor voice\, and the heart of an entertainer\, this charismatic performer has enthralled audiences everywhere he’s gone — bringing them from raucous sing-alongs to laughter to tears and everything in between.  \nIn recent years\, Dave has traversed the eastern continental U.S. by boat — traveling the Great Loop\, the Atlantic and Gulf Intracoastal Waterways\, and waterways in between\, and singing songs along the way. Dave’s journey aboard has taken him through 24 U.S. states and one Canadian province. His trusty guitar; his yacht\, Stinkpot; and his first mate\, Stacey\, have traveled well north of 12\,000 nautical miles since first casting off in 2018 on this odyssey on the water and the stage.  \nAs he has voyaged\, Dave has been playing to new audiences from yacht clubs to waterside coffee houses\, pubs\, and taverns—making friends and fans along the way. While traveling the Florida Panhandle\, the producers of ABC’s America’s Funniest Videos came into possession of a video of “the captain” in a lighthearted moment on stage and decided it needed to be on the show. With the boat safely docked in Pensacola\, Florida\, they flew Dave out to Los Angeles where his video placed second on the show\, being narrowly edged out of the top spot by a Canadian toddler who desperately wanted cake. \nDave’s music is handmade and heartfelt. It springs from deep roots borne out of the song traditions of Ireland and the British Isles\, cultivated in the roots music of North America\, and filtered through the musical sensibility of a classically-trained musician who is as at home directing a choir or wind ensemble as he is standing with his acoustic guitar in front of a large audience singing songs together. His original songs come from the heart of a poet and the soul of a maestro — examining subject matter as varied as Dave’s interests\, from songs of the sea to historical sketches\, from songs of abiding love to social commentary. \nA natural entertainer and storyteller\, Dave comes to it by birthright. Both grandfathers were professional jazz musicians\, his mother a professional singer\, and his father\, Tom\, was a much revered and talented linchpin of the popular folk trio\, Schooner Fare. They all made sure Dave was classically trained\, gifting this renaissance man the musical foundation to bloom and carry on the family musical tradition.  \n(Dave Rowe photo by Stacey Guth)

Closer to LI\, she shined during the Grassy Hill Emerging Artist Showcase at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival in Goshen\, CT.  \n \nSam Robbins \nSam Robbins describes himself as an “old soul singer-songwriter.”  His music evokes that of classic 1970s singer-songwriters like James Taylor and Neil Young\, while he adds a modern edge to the storyteller-troubadour persona.  An avid performer who plays more than 150 shows a year across the country\, Robbins has gained recognition from his extensive touring and as a winner in the Kerrville New Folk Competition for Emerging Songwriters in 2021. SUMMARY:Huntington Folk Festival
DESCRIPTION:Please help spread the word about the festival via email and social media! \nThe 17th annual Huntington Folk Festival is set for Saturday\, July 22\, at Heckscher Park\, located off Main Street (Route 25A) and Prime Avenue\, in Huntington\, NY.  Extending from 12:30 -10 p.m.\, with a dinner break from 6-7:15 p.m.\, the free event is co-presented by the Huntington Arts Council\, Folk Music Society of Huntington and AcousticMusicScene.com as part of the 58th Huntington Summer Arts Festival produced by the Town of Huntington. An evening concert featuring internationally touring singer-songwriters Lucy Kaplansky and Cliff Eberhardt will be preceded by a series of amplified song swaps and an open mic during the afternoon. \n \nCliff Eberhardt and Lucy Kaplansky (L-R) headline the festival. \nHailed as “the songwriter laureate of modern city folk\,” (The Boston Globe)\, Lucy Kaplansky is a NYC-based contemporary folk singer-songwriter with a luminous voice whose recordings have frequently topped the folk and Americana radio charts. Among the most respected and covered touring songwriters on the folk scene\, Massachusetts-based Cliff Eberhardt\, like Kaplansky\, cut his musical teeth playing NYC clubs centered around Greenwich Village during the folk/songwriter renaissance of the 1980s. These will be preceded by an hour-long open mic hosted by singer-songwriter Toby Tobias\, who co-hosts the NorthShore Original Open Mic (NOOM) that is co-presented by FMSH and the Cinema Arts Centre in the Cinema’s Sky Room on three Wednesday nights each month\, while FMSH’s monthly Hard Luck Café concert series takes place on the third Wednesday. \nArtists slated to showcase their talents during the afternoon include  (in alphabetical order by last name): Josie Bello\, Suzanne Ernst\, Roger Street Friedman\, Rorie Kelly\, Ray Lambiase\, Bill Lauter\, Mara Levine\, The Levins\, Annie Mark\, Stuart Markus\, Catherine Miles & Jay Mafale\, Louise Mosrie Coombe\,  Mark Newman\, James O’Malley\, Nico Padden\, Carolann Solebello\, Hank Stone\, Christine Sweeney\, and Toby Tobias \nThe complete schedule for the Huntington Folk Festival is below: \n12:30  Open Mic (hosted by Toby Tobias) \n1:30  Huntington’s Own: Josie Bello\, Suzanne Ernst\, Ray Lambiase \n2:00  LI Guys: Hank Stone\, Bob Westcott \n2:30  LI Gals: Rorie Kelly\, Nico Padden\, Christine Sweeney \n3:00  Huntington’s Own II: Bill Lauter\, Annie Mark\, Mark Newman \n4:00  A Pair of Duos: The Levins and Catherine Miles & Jay Mafale \n4:30  Let’s Hear It for the Guys:  Roger Street Friedman and Toby Tobias \n5:00  Classic Folk Covers: Mara Levine and Stuart Markus \n5:30  Women of Note: Louise Mosrie Coombe  and Carolann Solebello \n6:00 Dinner Break \n7:15  A Conversation with Cliff Eberhardt and Lucy Kaplansky \n8:00  Evening Concert: Cliff Eberhardt and Lucy Kaplansky \n  \nFestivalgoers are advised to bring lawn chairs and blankets and a picnic supper (or they can walk into Huntington Village and enjoy a meal at one of its many restaurants). \nThe Huntington Summer Arts Festival is produced by the Town of Huntington and presented by the Huntington Arts Council. SUMMARY:"Just Wild About Harry" Chapin Concert Set for July 16
DESCRIPTION:Photo Credit: Robert Berkowitz/RSBImageWorks.com \nMore than three-dozen of Long Island’s top musicians and songwriters will take to the stage at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow to perform the music of Harry Chapin\, the late Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter and social activist\, on Sunday\, July 16\, starting at 3:30 p.m. and extending late into the evening. The annual “Just Wild About Harry” tribute concert will feature 25 or more acts — including concert organizer Stuart Markus and his trio Gathering Time — performing some of Chapin’s classics including “Taxi” and “Cat’s in the Cradle\,” plus many lesser hits and fan favorites like “WOLD” and “Story of a Life.” The concert is free\, but concertgoers are asked to bring donations of nonperishable food to support Long Island Cares\, Inc.\, the regional food bank founded by Chapin in 1980. \nThis year’s concert takes place on the actual anniversary of Chapin’s tragic death on the Long Island Expressway in 1981 on the day he was supposed to do a show on that stage\, since renamed for him as The Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre. Several tribute show regulars were among the crowd in 1981 when what was supposed to be a joyous event turned into a vigil\, Markus said.  \nBecause this 20th-anniversary show is on a Sunday\, Markus said\, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman proposed making it an all-day event. “Each year\, the community comes together to\, in effect\, give the concert that Harry might have given\, with the participating artists putting their own interpretations on his songs. We’ve had some amazing arrangements\, from folky to country\, from torch-song style to hard rock.” There will also be food trucks and a bounce-house for kids. \n\n \n The concert will also be a benefit for Long Island Cares\, the Harry Chapin Food Bank. “The annual Harry Chapin Tribute Concert in Eisenhower Park is always a very special event for all of us at Long Island Cares because so many of Harry’s fans attend and are extremely supportive of Long Island Cares and the work we do to assist the more than 316\,000 Long Islanders struggling with domestic hunger and high food insecurity\,” said Paule Pachter\, the nonprofit organization’s chief executive officer.  \nAs in past years\, the Just Wild About Harry concert is being co-promoted by the Folk Music Society of Huntington\, of which Markus is a board member. Harry Chapin lived in Huntington with his family. \nBesides Markus and Gathering Time\, this year’s roster of performers includes newcomers Matthew Ponsot\, Roger Silverberg\, and Lisa Ann & Akiva Wharton\, plus touring English folk musician Daniel Cainer. Other performers include Hank Stone\, Frank Walker\, Roger Street Friedman\, Martha Trachtenberg\, Debra Lynn & Lora Kendall\, Media Crime\, Talya Smilowitz\, Joe Iadanza\, Miles & Mafale\, Russ Seeger\, Robin Eve\, Joanne Amante\, Christine Solimeno\, Mara Levine\, Judith Zweiman & Duane Michael Tucker\, Patricia Shih & Stephen Fricker\, the ensemble Will Sing for Food\, Grand Folk Railroad\, and Robin Greenstein\, with the possibility of other acts to be added. There will also be guest speakers and awards presentations.  \nLong Island Cares’ staff and volunteers will be collecting donations of non-perishable food items at a tent at the entrance to The Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre. They also will be selling t-shirts and Harry Chapin CDs\, as well as distributing literature about the organization’s programs and services.   \nThe concert will be held rain or shine\, precluded only by thunderstorms.
