His initiation as a modern troubadour came in 2008\, by train\, on a 45-day self-booked cross-country tour via Amtrak. Now\, myriad tours later\, he has been drawing audiences and critical acclaim with his inventive\, rhythmic guitar work \, clear\, soulful vocals\, and songs that capture people’s attention with humor\, daring honesty\, and grace – songs that challenge us to hope\, grow\, laugh\, and see beauty in all of life’s metaphors. “Garvey’s sandy tenor\, attention to rhythmic detail and winsome way with a melody bring to mind the music of Paul Simon in his Rhymin Simon days\, as well as contemporaries Josh Ritter and Jason Mraz\,” according to music blog Direct Current. \nIn recent years\, Connor has toured the US in his station wagon playing festivals\, house concerts\, and many of the country’s finest acoustic venues. His song “Soul on the Line” saw heavy rotation on Sirius XM’s “The Coffeehouse\,” garnering him a spot among its top six new singer songwriters of 2010. His 2011 release Where Ocean Meets Land drew extensive airplay and acclaim as well. He is currently at work on a new double-disc album featuring one disc recorded at a studio in Maine and the other live at a house concert in Bozeman\, Montana. \n\n\n  \nPhil Minissale\nGrowing up in the Brandywine Valley of southeastern Pennsylvania\, Phil Minissale began listening to Elizabeth Cotton\, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee\, Jorma Kaukonen and Gary Davis at a very young age. His understanding of the many strains of the blues is as complete as that of musicians two or three times his age. Formerly tagged the “Long Island Blues Boy\,” Phil\, now 24\, has evolved into a more seasoned roots singer-songwriter and has performed at venues\, festivals and colleges from Maine to Georgia\, as well as abroad. \nRepresenting the future of Piedmont fingerstyle blues playing\, Phil’s cross-generational appeal has many folks watching closely as he exposes his contemporaries to the acoustic folk/blues sound that is a warm reminder of the Greenwich Village acoustic music scene of the early 1960s. With the recording of his second full-length CD\, Young Fool\, he continued to build bridges between various acoustic genres\, keeping the traditional integrity of the music intact while breaking new ground with his timely songwriting. He’s currently putting the finishing touches on two new recording projects – one a collection of his own songs\, the other featuring the songs of the aforementioned Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee.

SUMMARY:Scott Wolfson and Other Heroes & Deborah Lombardi
DESCRIPTION:Tickets for this event are available at the Cinema Arts Center on the day of the performance. Prices are $8 for FMSH and Cinema Arts Centre Members / $12 for Non Members. There are no advance tickets for this event. \n\n— Deborah Lombardi —\n\nDeborah Lombardi is a Long Island-based singer-songwriter who has been described as a country version of Liz Phair. Mixing elements of rock\, pop and country music with catchy melodies and thought-provoking\, sometimes humorous lyrics\, Deborah performs both as a solo artist and along with her backup band\, accompanying her passionately-delivered vocals on guitar and piano. Her \noriginal songs have been heard in television and film soundtracks\, and have also garnered accolades from VH1’s Song of the Year Contest and the Billboard Songwriting Contest. She has played in venues all along the East Coast and has been making her mark on the greater New York-area music scene over the last decade. \nDeborah’s storytelling-through-songwriting is inspired by her own varied life experiences. These range from her classical training at the University of Miami School of Music and sojourns residing in New York\, Miami and Washington\, D.C.\, to her performing experiences — which run the gamut from doing musical theater to fronting rock bands. She’s graced the cover of Good Times magazine and has done several live radio and television appearances. Deborah\, who will be accompanied by her band for this performance\, has also released two CDs\, On the Fringe and Sweet Revenge. \n Here’s a link to a video of Deborah Lombardi performing her song “City Limits”: \n\n. \n\n— Scott Wolfson and Other Heroes —\n\nScott Wolfson and Other Heroes is a Jersey City\, NJ-based indie folk-pop band whose music ties together the distinctly New York threads of folk\, punk\, and Broadway with a pop sensibility steeped in classic R&B. Starting with folk music’s story-song roots and transforming them into subtle theatrical narratives driven by catchy melodies\, singer-songwriter Scott Wolfson’s songs\, featuring his haunting vocals and the band’s tightly-woven arrangements\, become unconventional “three-verse dramas” with a soundtrack that lingers. \n \nIn the short time since its inception in the summer of 2011\, the band\, which also includes classically-trained Skyler Bode on piano and keyboards\, Matt Laurita on lead guitar\, and Kirk SIee on upright bass\, has been making a name for itself around the New York metropolitan area with its infectious melodies\, insightful lyrics and compelling arrangements. Also joining them on April 18 will be singer-songwriter Jeremiah Birnbaum (mandolin\, banjo\, guitar and backing vocals) and Chris Kelly (drums and backing vocals). \nScott’s song “Apocalypse Café” was awarded an Honorable Mention in the 2012 Mid-Atlantic Song Contest; it appears on the band’s EP\, Born Broken\, and has been garnering radio airplay. Here’s a link to a YouTube video of Scott Wolfson and the Other Heroes performing “Apocalypse Cafe”:

Note: If you require multiple ticket types (ie: 1 member + 1 non-member ticket)\, please add one type to the cart\, return to the page\, and add the second type separately.\n\nFolk Music Society of Huntington Hosts An Evening of Young Folk\, on April 6 — Singer-Songwriters Ariana Gillis and Seth Glier perform in Centerport. \n Acclaimed young singer-songwriters Ariana Gillis of Ontario\, Canada and Seth Glier of Massachusetts will grace the stage at the Congregational Church of Huntington (30 Washington Drive\, Centerport) on Saturday\, April 6\, when the Folk Music Society of Huntington presents “An Evening of Young Folk” as part of its monthly First Saturday Concerts series. The 8:30 p.m. concert is preceded by an open mic at 7:30 p.m. \n— \nAriana Gillis\n Hailed as “the best new artist I’ve heard in a very long time” by Dave Marsh\, best-selling author and former music critic for Rolling Stone\, Ariana Gillis was named Young Performer of the Year in the 2009 Canadian Folk Music Awards and was the recipient of the Colleen Peterson Songwriting Award from the Ontario Arts Council last year. Gillis\, 22\, who has released two full-length CDS\, Forget Me Not and To Make It Make Sense\, recently did a residency at The Living Room in Manhattan and opened a series of U.S. concerts for Josh Ritter last month. \n Steve Wozniak\, Apple’s co-founder\, extols: “Ariana is two people in one. She’s a normal\, nice\, demure 21-year old\, but when she begins to sing her entire body is taken over by the most powerful force\, and the songs become a lot more than just words of music… Her stage presence is the most visually grabbing I’ve ever seen. I was stunned at the intense connection between herself and what she was singing; I thought of the strength of character that embodied Janis Joplin’s performances.” \n\n— \nSeth Glier\nDespite his relatively young age\, Massachusetts-based singer/songwriter/pianist/ guitarist Seth Glier\, 24\, is a seasoned troubadour. Averaging more than 250 live performances annually\, he has gone from opening act to headlining his own shows and playing major folk festivals. Glier\, who has recorded three albums for Mpress Records\, is known for his passionate live sets. His music has caught the ears of fans\, industry and music critics alike — with USA Today stating that Glier’s “exquisite tenor echoes Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel.” \n As a national spokesperson for the Autism Awareness Foundation\, an advocate for Musicians On Call\, and with a Rock The Vote Road Trip 2012 stop under his belt\, Glier has become increasingly comfortable expressing his social beliefs — both onstage and off. Last year\, the Independent Music Awards recognized “The Next Best Thing\,” the title track of Glier’s sophomore release\, as Best Social Action Song\, his second IMA win. He is currently touring in support of his Jan. 2013 release\, Things I Should Let You Know\, which he describes as “a reckoning with adulthood.” Glier’s songs aim straight for the gut and cast light on the challenges of adult life.

He’s been a three-time selection in the Woody Guthrie Folk Fest songwriters’ competition and was named the 2010 grand prize winner of Noel “Paul” Stookey’s Music2Life competition for his topical song “The Wall Street Fat Cat Tax Payer Bail-Out Blues.” Steve’s first CD\, It Is What It Is\, reached #12 on the Folk DJ charts in 2007; his new album\, Jack of All Trades\, was released in early 2013. www.stevechizmadia.com. \nArlon Bennett\n Arlon Bennett is an award-winning singer-songwriter who recently released his fourth studio album\, World of Possibility. A Long Island native\, he now resides in Rockland County. \n“Filled with universal truths\, World of Possibility is a joy to listen to\,” writes Richard Cuccaro\, editor of Acoustic Live! in New York City and Beyond. “An Americana/folk-pop songsmith\, Bennett delivers timeless vignettes and melodies that recall Harry Chapin and vintage James Taylor\, but with an eloquence\, emotional honesty and style all his own.” The CD was produced by John Sonntag\, who will accompany Arlon on guitar. \nA two-time finalist in the prestigious Grassy Hill-Kerrville New Folk Competition for Emerging Songwriters and twice selected by Noel Paul Stookey (of Peter\, Paul & Mary fame) to perform in his Music2Life Showcase featuring some of America’s best songs of social consciousness\, Arlon recognizes the power of music to reach people. A perfect example is the album’s title track\, which was borne from an invitation to perform at a Parkinson’s disease conference. “Be the Change” from Arlon’s previous release\, Summer’s Voice\, gained the distinction of being the #9 most-played song on folk radio\, while the New York Mets chose that CD’s title track for inclusion in a tribute video to Hall of Fame sportscaster Bob Murphy that was screened before a capacity home crowd.\nwww.arlonbennett.com.

SUMMARY:An Evening of Texas Troubadours
DESCRIPTION:The Folk Music Society of Huntington hosts “An Evening of Texas Troubadours” at the Cinema Arts Centre on Thursday\, Nov. 15\, as part of its monthly Hard Luck Café series. The 8:30 p.m. concert  featuring Brian Kalinec and Jarrod Dickenson will be preceded by an open mic at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 for Cinema Arts Centre and Folk Music Society of Huntington members; $12 for non-members. The Cinema Arts Centre is at 423 Park Avenue in Huntington. For more information\, visit www.fmsh.org or call (631) 425-2925.\nBrian Kalinec\nBrian Kalinecis an award-winning\, Houston-based Americana/folk singer-songwriter whose 2012 release\, The Fence — a collection of descriptive and poignant (yet musically accessible) stories in song that relate to the value of work and or effort in one way or another –  has charted on radio in the U.S. and Europe. \nKalinec’s East Texas roots have combined with his urban experiences in Houston to form his own particular view of the world\, which is reflected in his songs. “While I feel a strong connection to each of the album’s 11 original songs\, I have special empathy with the characters who find themselves in dire situations through no real fault of their own\, as in ‘Stranger in this Line’ and ‘Creosote’\,” says Kalinec. “It is also quite obvious that I value hard work\,” he continues\, noting that both “The Fence” and “Uncle Joe” celebrate the spirit of self-reliance. “However\, we are each morally responsible to aid the less fortunate among us. I believe that is the true message here.” \nKalinec is past president of the venerable Houston Songwriters Association and co-produced its annual Sonny Throckmorton Songwriters Festival during the 1990s. He was a winner in the Big Top Chautaqua Song Contest (2008) and took second place this summer in the Connecticut Folk Festival Song Competition. A recipient of the “My Texan” Award at the 2012 Texas Music Awards for his support of the music and musicians of the state\, Kalinec has produced a number of projects for other artists in addition to his own CDs. (www.briankalinec.com). \nJarrod Dickenson\nJarrod Dickenson is a Texas-born songwriter whose slightly spooky melodies and lyrics evoke a mid-Western post-war America\, when cars ran on leaded gas\, television hadn’t yet kidnapped the country’s imagination\, and men wore hats every day. His reflective lyrics\, almost like hand-written letters\, remind us that human stories of lost love\, sudden fortune\, and abiding mystery transcend the decades…and nothing is better or worse right now than it’s ever been. \nDickenson’s 2012 release\, The Lonesome Traveler\, is a panoramic collection of songs penned and performed with uncommon spirit and invention. He chronicles romance and struggle\, solitude and adventure in a rough-hewn voice that belies his relatively brief time on this earth. \nAlthough he recently moved to Brooklyn\, Dickenson spends most of his time on the road touring throughout the U.S. and Canada. No Depression described his songs as “simply breathtaking” and noted that his “world weary voice and phrasing… will win legions of admirers in the very near future.” The grand prize-winner at the annual Belfast Nashville Songwriters Competition a few years ago\, he performed as part of the Emerging Artists Showcase at this summer’s Falcon Ridge Folk Festival.
