John Whelan, Pat Kilbride & Lisa Gutkin

Mar 1, 1997

We celebrated St. Patrick's Day early with this trio of amazing instrumentalists. John's championship button accordion playing; Pat's guitar, cittern and vocals; and Lisa's haunting fiddle made this an unforgettable evening!

JOHN WHELAN has earned the reputation of being one of the all-time greatest button accordionists to grace a concert hall! As a gifted composer of jigs, reels, hornpipes, airs and waltzes, John took the audience on a journey to Ireland when he transformed the stage into the Emerald Isle for the evening with his musical talents. John has been competing on the button accordion since the tender age of 11 and has won seven All-Ireland, six All-Britain and one North American championship. His Narada album Celtic Reflections: Misty-Eyed Morning has sold over forty-thousand copies and he has a new one on the way! John is also a founding member of the Kips Bay Ceili Band

Joining John, is fellow Kips Bay Ceili Band member, PAT KILBRIDE who hails from County Kildare in Ireland. As a renowned singer/songwriter, he delighted the audince with his superb style of guitar and cittern playing. Pat, a deep-rooted Irish music legend in his own right, was the only Irishman ever featured in Scotland's acclaimed Battlefield Band. His haunting vocal talents entered our ears and filled our hearts with a love for Ireland's music and beauty.

Rounding out this Shamrock of Irish performers was LISA GUTKIN, who as a New York area fiddler performs with the popular Celtic band Whirligig. She is a composer of Irish music and can also be heard on John Whelan's new CD. Lisa is an amazingly diverse musician, whose style and finesse on the violin have earned her praise in circles where fiddle playing is highly respected.
