ISLAND SONGWRITERS SHOWCASE

ISLAND SONGWRITERS SHOWCASE

The Island Songwriter Showcase (ISS) is a Long Island-based volunteer organization of songwriters, lyricists, producers, engineers, performers, and DJ's with a common purpose: to develop and support musical talent through community, workshops, peer review and live performances. The ISS has become the largest, most visible and sought-after group of songwriters on Long Island.   Visit the ISS website

The Hard Luck Café was proud to present six of the top singer-songwriters of ISS performing a capella and as writers-in-the-round.

ISLAND SONGWRITERS SHOWCASE PERFORMERS

SONNY SPEED

Sonny Speed, Director of the ISS, introduced the performers.

WALTER SARGENT
Walter Sargent - From an early age, Walt Sargent wanted to understand what makes music tick. Curiosity led to studying theory & composition and years of performing with various bands. Scarlatti (piano) and marching band (french horn) — were promptly traded in for the electric guitar when he heard Jimmy Page’s guitar solo on Black Dog. He played guitar with a lot of local bands and performed for many years with Opera Pro Voce.

SUZANNE ERNST
Suzanne Ernst - Singer/songwriter Suzanne Ernst combines 60's folk and pop influences with a lifelong interest in spiritual studies to create thoughtful, sometimes humorous, songs that gently provoke an inward look for the truth. ISS Director Sonny Speed calls Suzanne “a true folk singer that represents both the writing and vocal style of the classic 60's coffee house style”.

PEDRO PERERIA
Pedro Pereria - Pedro Pereira’s debut CD Last Man on the Planet has received much critical acclaim: Good Times Magazine hailed Pereira as a “new soulful voice;” Harmony-Central's Ara Ajizian said, “Music like this deserves to be popular.” A writer and editor for 20 years, Pereira drew from personal experience as a journalist, father and husband to write the songs which serve up a healthy dose of social commentary.

TIM HUSS
Tim Huss - Tim Huss’ songs are a blend of folk, country, pop, and gospel that feature his strong vocals and meaningful lyrics. Tim's vocals are his strong suit and are featured on the upcoming Tornado Alley CD. As a writer, Tim has won many ISS Writers Choice awards and has been compared to singer/songwriters like Gordon Lightfoot, John Denver, Jim Croce and Harry Chapin.

DENISE ROMAS
Denise Romas - Denise Romas writes songs that often tug at the heartstrings. Fellow ISS member, Walt Sargent says, "Denise's songs are moving, sometimes bittersweet, warm and touching and her voice is so authentic." Denise has been featured at many ISS events and has won the monthly ISS Writers Choice Award. Her new full length CD Inspired was just released and has been met with great reviews.

SONNY MEADOWS
Sonny Meadows - Sonny Meadows has been a mainstay of the local music scene for the past ten years — his topical song-writing has garnered acclaim from progressive social organizations. As lyricist for the senior citizen rockin'-blues band “The Defibrillators”, Sonny has enjoyed critical acclaim along with some of the Island's finest musicians. These musical adventures have given Sonny the opportunity to meet and open for artists like John Hammond, Christine Lavin, Leon Russell and others.
